Games Industry Needs More Than Shooters And Platformers, Says David Cage
More Innovation Needed, Says Heavy Rain Creator
David Cage, creator of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, has said the games industry needs more than shooters and platforming titles.
Speaking during his D.I.C.E presentation today, entitled ‘The Peter Pan Syndrome: The Industry That Refused to Grow Up’, Cage criticised a lack of innovation in the industry.
“We need to decide as an industry that violence and platforms are not the only way,” he said, (via Kotaku). “We are in an industry where, if the main character doesn’t hold a gun, designers don’t know what to do.”
Cage expressed the importance of divergence and reaching out to new audiences, and called for a focus on the thoughts of players, not their thumbs.
He also spotlighted the importance of players’ buying decisions. “Buy crap and you will get more crap,” he said. “Buy exciting and ambitious games and you will get more of them.”
