Controversy Over Whore Of The Orient’s Title

Lo’s Law

With Team Bondi in dire straits after completing the highly successful LA Noire, studio founder Brendan Macnamara struck up a deal with Kennedy Miller Mitchell (the company behind the Mad Max films) to save Team Bondi and create his new shanghai-situated title, Whore of the Orient. The production of LA Noire was riddled with problems, and the studio was reportedly left with debts of over $1.6 million, but with Kennedy Miller Mitchell replacing Rockstar as Team Bondi’s backer, the new title seems set to go forward regardless.

However, Jieh-Yung Lo, a city of Monash Councillor in Australia finds the name of the upcoming game offensive and intends to take the matter to the international court of human rights if necessary, saying

‘It’s the use of the word ‘Orient’, more even than the word ‘whore’, that is the issue,” he explained. ”The O-word is very similar to the N-word for African-American communities. It’s a 19th century racial-colonial conception and it’s especially painful for older people in the communities. That was a very bad time in China, and people don’t want or need to have that dragged up.”

Mr. Lo was also appalled that the game had received state funding, adding, ”The most shocking revelation is that [game developer] Team Bondi received $200,000 from Screen New South Wales to develop the project,”

Brendan Macnamara has called the project a telling of a great “untold story” about what was at the time one of the most wild and corrupt cities in the world. A Team Bondi spokesperson also fired back against allegations of racism by noting that Whore of the Orient simply refers to a historical nickname of the city of Shanghai in the 1936 era when the game was set.

Mr Lo is demanding that either the title of the game be changed or that development cease on the project immediately. Whore of the Orient is scheduled for release sometime in 2015.
