Baldur’s Gate & Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition Announced

Baldur-dash

Released in 1998, Baldur’s Gate was heralded as one of the finest RPG’s to ever grace the market. The sequel, Baldur’s Gate 2, was also brilliant. So when we heard the news that both Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 were receiving “enhanced editions” we predictably went a little bit mental.

A teaser site was launched prior to the announcement, and now that the timer has finally run-down, all has been revealed (though details are still relatively scarce at this point – more to come).

The official blurb on the site states that, ”Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate 2: Enhanced Edition will feature a re-forged version of the Infinity Engine with a variety of modern improvements.”

A Beamdog representative told Joystiq that the team at Overhaul (responsible for the enhancing) is adding “new, original content” to the original game to make up the Enhanced Edition.

“This is the Enhanced Edition, it’s not a repackage. We have the original source code and are doing a significant update.” He also confirms that no platforms have been announced just yet (but let’s take a wild shot in the dark and say that the PC is one of them).

For fans who are shuddering at the thought of their favourite game being tampered with, fear not. The new content is ”being lovingly crafted in the spirit of the original with the help of some of the original developers.”
